[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Seoul Downtown Tourism Council (Chairman Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu) held the "Seoul Downtown Tourism Council First Half Regular Meeting" on the 6th at the Korea Furniture Museum.

Composed of six autonomous districts?Seongbuk-gu, Mapo-gu, Seodaemun-gu, Jongno-gu, Jung-gu, and Yongsan-gu?the "Seoul Downtown Tourism Council" is an administrative council formed to seek joint development plans through cooperation and solidarity among local governments for fair and sustainable tourism development.

Following last year’s first-term chairmanship by Jongno-gu, Seongbuk-gu was elected as the second-term chair this year and is actively promoting joint cooperative projects for tourism collaboration among the six downtown districts.

The council jointly cooperates to revitalize sustainable tourism that respects the lives and cultures of local residents, spread historical and cultural values through discovering connected downtown tourism resources, promote local tourism through activation of lifestyle tourism content, improve systems through mutual cooperation with the central government and Seoul city, and establish collaborative governance involving residents and the tourism industry.

Last year, the council undertook initiatives such as signing a fair tourism win-win agreement, producing downtown tourism guide maps for the six districts, proposing revisions to the Seoul City Tour bus routes, and conducting basic research for downtown tourism cooperation.

In 2021, promotional videos for the six downtown districts were produced under the concept of "Hanyang Center," aiming to raise awareness among domestic and international tourists of the area as the "center of Seoul tourism."

In March, the six districts jointly published lifestyle tourism spots that can be enjoyed in a day within close proximity in community newsletters, providing an opportunity for residents exhausted by COVID-19 to soothe their bodies and minds through everyday tourism.

At the meeting, serious discussions were also held regarding a project to jointly promote tourism videos, photos, and other materials from the six districts through an online fair that would create a virtual exhibition hall within an online platform.

Chairman Lee Seung-ro emphasized the "importance of promotion suited to the era of contactless tourism and YouTube," and urged "continuous cooperation so that the six districts can leverage each other’s strengths and unite for a second leap forward."
