[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The National Assembly's Industry, Trade, Energy, Small and Medium Venture Business Committee concluded the confirmation hearing for Moon Seung-wook, the nominee for Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, after about eight hours on the 4th, and adopted the confirmation hearing report.
The committee conducted an in-depth review of whether the nominee possesses the expertise, morality, and compliance necessary to perform the duties as Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, and concluded that "he is evaluated to have overall competence and qualifications," issuing a 'qualified' opinion.
Some committee members considered factors such as his strong commitment to addressing key industrial issues including the global semiconductor supply shortage, clear recognition of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's role as the main agency for national balanced development policies, and his abundant administrative experience and expertise gained through over 30 years of public service in the industrial sector.
However, some opposition members pointed out that issues such as avoidance of gift tax payment, investment in funds linked to wartime companies, lack of explanation regarding real estate capital gains and purchase funds fall short of the high standards of morality and fairness required of Cabinet members, indicating the need to supplement the capabilities necessary for performing his duties.
The committee adopted the confirmation hearing report including a recommendation to carefully consider the concerns raised by some members and to thoroughly review policy alternatives, emphasizing the need for dedicated efforts to resolve upcoming challenges.
