[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A sandstorm originating from Mongolia last weekend has swept across China, causing various accidents, and South Korea is also expected to be affected by the yellow dust coming from China starting today, the 28th.
On the 26th (local time), Chinese media reported that a sandstorm swept through Gansu Province in northwest China, worsening air pollution and increasing traffic accidents.
According to aerial photos taken on the 25th, a yellow dust cloud covered a village in Gansu Province.
China's state-run media CCTV also reported that visibility decreased due to the yellow dust, resulting in multiple traffic accidents in the area.
Meteorologists urged people to keep windows closed and stay indoors as more severe sandstorms are expected across northern China.
Every spring, yellow dust originating from the Gobi Desert spreads across China, affecting the entire country, including distant cities on the eastern coast such as Shandong.
In March, yellow dust struck Beijing, causing hundreds of flight cancellations. That yellow dust event was recorded as the worst sandstorm in 10 years.
Today, the 28th, yellow dust from China is expected to reach South Korea as well.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted, "From early this morning, short rain showers lasting about 2 to 3 hours will fall in the Chungcheong region and Jeonbuk, followed by the northern part of Jeonnam, western Gyeongbuk, and northwestern inland Gyeongnam," adding, "Afterwards, yellow dust will be observed across various parts of South Korea."
The Meteorological Administration stated, "Yellow dust originated from the Gobi Desert on the 26th and is moving southeastward on northwesterly winds, with additional dust originating from the Gobi Desert on the 27th. It is expected to affect South Korea today."
