Putting Nameplates on Unnamed Buildings... Jongno-gu Promotes 'Building Naming' Initiative

Building name registration in the building register possible through application by the building owner

Putting Nameplates on Unnamed Buildings... Jongno-gu Promotes 'Building Naming' Initiative

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (Mayor Kim Young-jong) is promoting the "Building Value UP! Naming Buildings" project targeting buildings that either have no name on the building register or have a commonly used name that is not recorded in the register.

This initiative aims to resolve inconveniences such as difficulty in locating buildings due to unknown exact addresses despite having a building name, or confusion caused by the absence of names in the official building register despite the existence of commonly used names.

The district plans to conduct basic investigations including register verification and on-site surveys, then send quarterly notification letters to building owners encouraging them to apply for name registration.

Once the owner applies, the building name will be recorded in the building register, and any changes will be notified to related departments such as the taxation office, with electronic registration requests submitted to the relevant registry office.

The recorded name will also be automatically registered on the Road Name Address website.

Building names are recommended to reflect the characteristics of the area and building or to use native Korean words that evoke familiarity. Applications will be restricted for foreign languages or special characters that cannot be registered, names exceeding 15 characters, or simple use of the owner's name.

The service is free of charge, and applications can be submitted by visiting the district office’s Real Estate Information Division or by mail.

For inquiries, assistance is available at the Real Estate Management Team.

Meanwhile, the district is also accepting applications for detailed addresses that specify the exact location within a building. Detailed addresses, indicated by building unit, floor, and room numbers following the road name address, are essential for mail delivery and emergency situations.

They can be assigned to buildings such as one-room apartments, multi-family houses, and commercial buildings. Owners or tenants can apply through the government civil service portal Government24, by visiting the district office’s Road Name Address Team, or by mail.

Mayor Kim Young-jong stated, “Recording building names unifies the actual usage names with official registers, improving the accuracy of building information and increasing recognition. We ask for the active interest and participation of building owners.”
