Dream Car, Popular Camping Car Users Reveal Top Car Camping Spots

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Kosen Mobility, which operates the campervan sharing platform Kkumcar, announced on the 23rd an analysis of campervan users rented through Kkumcar and revealed popular car camping (sleeping and staying in a car) spots.

Kkumcar is Korea's first campervan sharing platform, operating the Rodi series based on the compact car Ray, the authentic American campervan Winnebago, as well as the Haslla 350S model based on the Starex.

This data randomly selected 100 customers who used the Rodi campervan through Kkumcar over the past six months (September 2020 to February 2021), with departure points based on 12 nationwide stores where vehicle rentals are available.

When categorizing Kkumcar users' destinations by region, the order was West Sea coast (34%), inland (28%), Jeju Island (19%), East Sea coast (16%), and South Sea coast (3%). In the West Sea region, Incheon and Hwaseong had high visit rates; inland destinations included Pyeongchang and Gapyeong; and in the East Sea region, Gangneung and Sokcho were popular.

Additionally, in the West Sea and inland regions, users tended to concentrate on specific tourist spots such as Yongyudo in Incheon, Jebudo in Hwaseong, and Cheongoksan in Pyeongchang. In contrast, the East Sea region showed usage across various locations including Gyeongpodae in Gangneung, Anmok Beach, Jumunjin, Songjiho in Sokcho, Janghang Port, and Hajodae.

Yongyudo is popular due to its good accessibility from Seoul and the presence of private campgrounds for car campers nearby, attracting people who want to watch sunsets and sunrises. Cheongoksan (Yukbaekmajigi), despite prohibiting camping and cooking, is well-known as a prime stargazing spot and is frequently used as a stopover.

Other notable car camping travel destinations included Dalmaji Square in Yeoju, Mokgyenaruteo in Chungju, Saebyeol Park in Danyang, Daebudo in Ansan, and Mungye Observatory in Daegwallyeong. Campervan users were mainly popular among people in their 20s and 30s, with a gender ratio (based on reservations) of 65% male and 35% female.

Kim Jang-su, CEO of Kkumcar, said, “This data is the first reliable information publicly released by a campervan sharing operator and will serve as a good reference for planning car camping trips. We will continue to disclose various data on campervan travel to do our best in establishing contactless emotional campervan travel and the RV leisure industry.”
