[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] A man who dressed the Statue of Peace in a Japanese military padded jacket is under police investigation after being reported for insult charges.

According to the police on the 23rd, the Gangdong Police Station in Seoul is investigating a man identified as Mr. A, who dressed the Statue of Peace located on the lawn in front of Gangdong-gu Office in a Japanese military padded jacket around January 22. At the time, he also left shoes and a bag next to the statue.

Earlier, the "Gangdong-gu Peace Statue Preservation Citizens' Committee" filed a complaint with the police on January 25, requesting the arrest of the perpetrator, viewing this act as an insult and defamation against comfort women victims and the residents of Gangdong-gu.

However, after it was revealed that Mr. A, who was apprehended by the prosecution, had been suffering from a mental illness, the committee decided to withdraw the complaint. It is reported that they are currently asking for consent from the citizens who donated to erect the statue.

The organization raised about 50 million won in August 2019 to build this statue.
