Pohang City "Achieving Carbon Neutrality by 2050" ... 'Environmental Dream City' Proclamation Ceremony

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] On Earth Day, the 22nd, Pohang City held a proclamation ceremony for 'Environmental Dream City Pohang,' which includes the realization of carbon neutrality by 2050, at the City Hall Daejam Hall. The ceremony was attended by Mayor Lee Kang-deok, members of the Sustainable Development Committee, and representatives from various sectors of the citizenry.

'Environmental Dream City Pohang' embodies the vision of ▲ Dreaming (Dream) an environment where nature coexists with citizens ▲ Transforming into an environmental city where citizens dream (Dream) ▲ Aspiring to leap into a safe city responding to climate crises such as tsunamis and typhoons.

Pohang City plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from 37 million tons in 2017 by 25% by 2030, 55% by 2040, and achieve carbon neutrality by the end of 2050 to realize the 'Environmental Dream City.'

On this day, Mayor Lee Kang-deok declared 'Environmental Dream City Pohang,' expressing the will to execute life and urban transformation tasks toward a green environmental city.

To implement the Environmental Dream City, Pohang City has established three major strategies: ▲ Creating an ecological environment city ▲ Building a low-carbon economic foundation ▲ Responding to and acting on the climate crisis. It also presented 10 major tasks and 31 detailed projects, planning to establish and continuously pursue execution plans for each sector.

Representing civic groups, Kim Jeong-rye, Chairwoman of the Women's Association Council, read a pledge for citizens' practical actions toward carbon neutrality, and all attendees resolved to actively participate in carbon neutrality.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, "Realizing carbon neutrality is an obligation of our generation, and decarbonization of Pohang's main industry, the steel industry, is urgent," adding, "We will transform Pohang into a green ecological city by continuously expanding greenways, improving residential environments, and fostering new growth industries."
