Eunpyeong-gu, Resident Petition Campaign for Establishment (Relocation) of Middle Schools in Nokbeon and Eungam-dong

Signature campaign to be held from April 21 to May 21... Majority of residents' opinions to be conveyed to related agencies

Eunpyeong-gu, Resident Petition Campaign for Establishment (Relocation) of Middle Schools in Nokbeon and Eungam-dong

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Eunpyeong-gu (Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) is promoting a resident-led petition campaign to address the inconvenience of long-distance commuting caused by the increase in the number of middle school students due to the development of the Nokbeon and Eungam areas, despite no middle school being established.

The long-standing commuting inconvenience for students has been accelerating due to the disparity between regions caused by the unbalanced placement of middle schools within the Western School Districts 1 and 2 in the area.

In particular, with about 8,800 new apartment households moving in due to the development of Nokbeon and Eungam areas, and additional move-ins planned for Eungam District 1 (879 households) and Eungam District 4 (358 households), urgent measures are needed.

Accordingly, Eunpyeong-gu will carry out a petition campaign together with residents to convey to the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, Seoul City, and related agencies that the demand for establishing a middle school is not just a minority opinion but represents the majority of residents, aiming for the prompt realization of the middle school establishment (or relocation).

The petition campaign will be conducted through the Nokbeon and Eungam-dong Middle School Establishment (Relocation) Promotion Council, composed of Eunpyeong-gu and local residents. The campaign period is from April 21 to May 21, targeting more than 30,000 signatures, approximately 30% of the population of Nokbeon, Eungam 1, and Eungam 2-dong.

Any resident wishing to participate in the petition can visit the Nokbeon-dong, Eungam 1-dong, or Eungam 2-dong community centers or access the Eunpyeong-gu Office website to sign online.

Mayor Kim Mi-kyung stated, “I thank the local residents who have worked with Eunpyeong-gu to establish a middle school in the Nokbeon and Eungam areas. I ask everyone to join this petition campaign to improve our children’s commuting conditions and to unite efforts so that the middle school establishment can be realized promptly.”
