[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] POSCO Energy is sharing eco-friendly values for future generations through a community forest creation project.
On the 21st, POSCO Energy held a 'Carbon Neutral Forest Creation' planting event in the Nogok-myeon area of Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do, attended by representatives from Samcheok Blue Power, a subsidiary constructing the Samcheok Thermal Power Plant, the Eastern Regional Forest Service of Samcheok-si, and the Korea Climate Change Research Institute.
This forest creation project is the second-year event following the planting of 5,000 trees last year in the damaged area to restore the forest fire damage that occurred in Gangwon-do in 2019, carried out by POSCO Energy together with Samcheok Blue Power. The fund for the 'Carbon Neutral Forest Creation' was prepared by the two companies donating a portion of their profits.
This year, 5,350 black locust trees will be planted on a 2-hectare (ha) site in the Nogok-myeon area of Samcheok-si, Gangwon-do. POSCO Energy expects this to absorb approximately 600 tons of carbon dioxide over 30 years. The planting results will be certified for greenhouse gas reduction performance through registration in the government-led Forest Carbon Offset System project.
Jung Ki-seop, President of POSCO Energy, said, "POSCO Energy plans to create about 120,000 pyeong of carbon-neutral forest through a long-term plan established over more than 10 years to practice the corporate citizenship management philosophy," adding, "We will continue to fulfill our role as a corporate citizen by communicating with the local community and restoring forests to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050."
