Hyundai Motor Resumes Production at Asan Plant Halted Due to Car Semiconductor Supply Shortage

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Je-hoon] Hyundai Motor Company's Asan plant, which had stopped operations again last week due to a shortage of automotive semiconductors, has resumed production.

Hyundai Motor announced on the 21st that production resumed at the Asan plant, which had halted operations on the 19th and 20th, as the supply of automotive semiconductors was restored. The Asan plant produces best-selling models such as the Grandeur and mid-size sedans like the Sonata.

Previously, Hyundai Motor had also stopped and then resumed operations on the 12th and 13th due to the semiconductor supply shortage. According to Hyundai Motor, the production disruption during the recent two-day halt affected approximately 2,050 vehicles, and including the two days of stoppage last week, the total estimated production loss is about 4,100 vehicles.

Meanwhile, production disruptions in the finished car industry due to the shortage of automotive semiconductors have become a regular occurrence. Hyundai Motor also halted operations at its Ulsan Plant 1, which produces the first dedicated electric vehicle Ioniq 5, for a week from the 7th to the 14th.

In addition, Korea GM has adjusted the operating rate of its Bupyeong Plant 2 to 50% since February and will suspend operations at Bupyeong Plants 1 and 2 from the 19th to the 23rd. Ssangyong Motor will also halt vehicle production at its Pyeongtaek plant from the 19th to the 23rd.
