Gwangju City Selected as the Nation's Best Institution for 'Winter Disaster Response'


[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 20th that it was selected as the best institution among 17 metropolitan local governments in the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's '2020~2021 Winter Heavy Snow and Cold Wave Countermeasure Government Joint Evaluation.'


This government joint evaluation comprehensively assessed the winter season preparedness and the heavy snow and cold wave response measures over four months from November 15 last year.


The main evaluation items consisted of ▲results of the central joint inspection on prior preparedness (50 points) ▲number of deaths and cold-related illnesses ▲property damage amount, number of pipe bursts ▲interest of local government heads, publicity, protection activities for vulnerable groups ▲adjustment of commuting hours and other heavy snow and cold wave response measures (50 points).


Gwangju City received high praise in all areas including thorough prior preparation, high interest from the local government head, protection activities for vulnerable groups, minimizing damage, and adjustment of commuting hours, securing a special grant of 500 million won and receiving a commendation from the national disaster management agency.


Moon Beom-su, Director of the Citizen Safety Office of the city, said, “As a result of efforts to ensure citizens' safety and convenience from winter disasters, we achieved the outcome of being selected as the best institution,” and added, “We will also work harder to create a safe Gwangju by thoroughly preparing for heat waves and wind and water disasters.”
