Progressive Party Jeonnam Provincial Committee Strongly Condemns Japan's Decision to Discharge Nuclear Contaminated Water

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Progressive Party strongly condemned Japan's decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

The Jeonnam Provincial Party of the Progressive Party urged the Japanese government on the 19th, through a statement, to immediately withdraw the decision to release contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean.

They stated, "Japan's discharge of contaminated water from the nuclear power plant is an anti-humanitarian criminal act that threatens life and the ecological environment," and added, "No one has the authority to destroy the common assets of life and humanity."

They continued, "Japan, as a country affected by atomic bomb damage, should be the most aware of the dangers of radioactive materials," and argued, "Japan's decision to discharge contaminated water from the nuclear power plant, which puts the world at risk and seeks only its own interests despite strong opposition from the international community, is heinous."

They also emphasized, "Jeonnam, rich in fishery resources, will undoubtedly suffer a huge blow to the livelihoods of fishermen due to public concerns about possible contamination of seafood," and added, "Fishermen in the Jeonnam region are holding maritime protests, strongly condemning the decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant and demanding its withdrawal."

Furthermore, they said, "President Moon Jae-in instructed to consider filing a case with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, but this alone is insufficient," and stated, "Strong protests must be made to the United States regarding the discharge of contaminated water from the Japanese nuclear power plant, which was effectively approved solely by the U.S."

In addition, they added, "We must protect the lives and safety of the people through strong measures such as a complete ban on imports of Japanese seafood and declaring a boycott of the Tokyo Olympics."
