27 Eupmyeondong 'Seomseom Yeosu Segyero 3 Major Civic Movements' Relay Launch
Nation's First Resident-Initiated Samrye Integration and Civic Spirit Mobilization Civic Movement Ignited
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Jeonnam Yeosu City (Mayor Kwon Oh-bong) successfully concluded the relay launch ceremony of the ‘Seomseom Yeosu to the World 3 Major Citizen Movements’ and officially embarked toward a new 100-year future for Yeosu through citizen participation and harmony.
According to Yeosu City on the 19th, the ‘Seomseom Yeosu to the World 3 Major Citizen Movements’ is a broad citizen movement of Yeosu City’s 7th term of direct election, aimed at advancing Yeosu onto the world stage through setting three strategic goals and encouraging citizen participation, support, and harmony.
It is a strategy to achieve three goals together with citizens by uniting the great civic spirit that accomplished the nation’s first resident initiative for Samryeo integration and successfully hosted the 2012 Yeosu World Expo: ‘Yeosu expanding to the world,’ ‘completion of three core projects (successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo, enactment of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Special Act, and attracting COP28),’ and ‘inheritance of the Samryeo integration spirit.’
Starting with the launch ceremony in Yeoseo-dong on the 8th of last month and continuing through Sijeon-dong on the 16th, 788 committee members from 27 eup, myeon, and dong practice headquarters participated, strengthening their resolve for the citizen movement through reading the pledge of practice, delivering practice flags, and performing a ritual to pray for the approval of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo as an international event.
At the final launch ceremony in Sijeon-dong, citizens expressed their passion and will to soar Yeosu onto the world stage by flying ‘paper airplanes of hope.’
The city plans to designate the first Wednesday of every month as a focused practice day and carry out large-scale citizen movements. In the second half of the year, it will promote advance meetings and sisterhood ties with institutions and organizations in accordance with the COVID-19 situation to create a voluntary participation boom among all citizens.
Mayor Kwon Oh-bong of Yeosu said, “The greatest contributor to making Yeosu what it is today is the great civic spirit of Yeosu citizens,” and added, “Let us turn crisis into opportunity and unite our strength in the Seomseom Yeosu to the World 3 Major Citizen Movements to make our dreams a reality so that Yeosu can leap to a higher level.”
Meanwhile, the launch ceremony was held outdoors in an open space, limiting the number of participants and strictly adhering to quarantine rules such as social distancing to prevent concerns about COVID-19 infection.
