[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) will conduct customized visiting environmental education for all age groups to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

The rise in the Earth's average temperature, that is, climate change caused by global warming, not only directly harms the survival of all humanity but also leads to a decrease in biodiversity, weakened health, reduced food production, and threatens the survival bases of many countries due to sea level rise.

In July 2020, 80 local governments nationwide, including Seongbuk-gu, launched the "Carbon Neutral Local Government Practice Alliance," declaring that local governments would help each other for carbon neutrality.

Accordingly, Seongbuk-gu judged that to realize carbon neutrality by 2050, residents' awareness of the necessity of global warming and carbon neutrality and the corresponding lifestyle practices must be supported, and decided to promote "customized visiting environmental education" for all age groups.

This environmental education will be conducted by dividing the target by age group. First, for infants, who form various values such as lifestyle habits and social norms, the "Visiting Environmental Classroom for Infants" will be held until July. For elementary school students, the "Visiting Children's Environmental Classroom" will operate from the 19th of this month until June, and a "Summer Vacation Seongbuk Children's Environmental Camp" is also planned. For adolescent students, the school environmental club "School Power Saving Station" will be conducted. For adults, programs such as the "Environmental Academy for Training Green Leaders," a professional instructor training course related to the environment, and the "Visiting Carbon Neutral Resident Practice Group Training" will be held.

In particular, the "Visiting Carbon Neutral Resident Practice Group Training" course, planned by Seongbuk-gu from this year to allow any resident interested in the climate crisis and carbon neutrality to easily receive environmental education, is scheduled to be held at each neighborhood community center. After completing the training, participants will be appointed as members of the "Carbon Neutral Resident Practice Group" and will engage in various activities for carbon neutrality practice, including operating carbon neutrality promotion centers.

The district also announced that environmental education will be provided to all employees of the district office and neighborhood community centers to reflect carbon neutrality in policies.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, said, "We will do our best to create a sustainable Seongbuk-gu where the economy, society, and environment are balanced by conducting 'customized visiting environmental education' for all age groups to build a consensus among residents for achieving carbon neutrality," and added, "All environmental education instructors will strictly follow quarantine guidelines during classes, including conducting COVID-19 tests before lessons."
