Kim Soo-young, Yangcheon District Mayor, Emphasizes Thorough Preparedness for Summer Flood and Wind Disaster Prevention: Reasons Explained?

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Sooyoung) has prepared a response system for summer flood and typhoon prevention under the mission that "natural disaster prevention is another form of quarantine."

The district is thoroughly preparing by conducting comprehensive inspections and maintenance of disaster prevention facilities such as sewage systems, rainwater pumping stations, and sluice gates in preparation for heavy summer rains and typhoons, ensuring that residents, already exhausted from COVID-19, do not face additional worries.

Since February, the district has completed inspections of disaster-prone areas, stockpiling flood control materials, and the inspection and repair of rainwater pumping stations that quickly discharge rainwater flowing in during heavy rains into rivers to prevent flood damage.

Additionally, the district has dredged sewage pipes in areas previously affected by flooding and provides free installation of backflow preventers immediately upon request to block rainwater from flowing back through household drains. All inspections and preparations will be completed by May 15, and a 24-hour emergency duty system will be implemented for five months until October 15.

In particular, the district is providing free support for the installation of flood prevention facilities such as water barriers installed at entrances of low-lying houses and windows of semi-basement homes to block surface water from entering buildings during rain, indoor backflow preventers installed in bathroom or kitchen drains to prevent backflow, and submersible pumps.

Kim Sooyoung, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, "We will mobilize all personnel and resources to thoroughly prepare so that residents, already exhausted from COVID-19, do not suffer damage from flood disasters," and added, "We ask residents to report any hazardous facilities they find to the district's Water Management Division or the nearest community service center."
