Constant Monitoring of Harmful Information for Adolescents on the Internet
Recruiting a Total of 200 Participants from April 19 to May 7
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] A monitoring team to check whether harmful content to youth, such as proxy purchases of alcohol and cigarettes, sex toys like real dolls, and promotion of harmful businesses, is being properly managed will be operated starting in June.
On the 18th, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that it will recruit 200 members for a monitoring team to inspect the harmfulness of online media for youth due to COVID-19.
The Youth Harmful Media Monitoring Team will check whether providers of youth-harmful media content, such as content prohibited for those under 19, are properly fulfilling their obligation to mark harmful content for youth, and will conduct ongoing monitoring of harmful information for youth on the internet.
The monitoring team will focus on harmful videos, proxy purchases of alcohol and cigarettes, promotion of drinking (so-called Sulbang), youth-harmful items (sex toys such as real dolls), promotion of harmful businesses, gambling, youth prostitution, and other illegal and harmful information. The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family plans to take measures such as requesting review and blocking, correction demands, or criminal charges based on the monitoring results.
The monitoring team will be recruited from April 19 to May 7. Any adult aged 19 or older who is interested in videos and social networking services and can participate in monitoring activities without hindrance can apply. Selected members will undergo a prescribed training course and perform inspection duties for six months (June to November).
190 members will work as inspectors, working 15 hours per week from home, and 10 members will work as managers, working 40 hours per week.
