[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) announced on the 15th that 13 prosecutors, including 2 chief prosecutors and 11 ordinary prosecutors, were appointed as CIO prosecutors by the President following recommendations from the CIO Personnel Committee. Their terms begin on the 16th.
The number of prosecutors stipulated by the CIO Act, excluding the head and deputy head, is 23. The CIO explained, "Initially, the plan was to recruit 23 CIO prosecutors, but after thorough discussions, the CIO Personnel Committee recommended suitable candidates for CIO prosecutors, and ultimately, 13 prosecutors, including 2 chief prosecutors and 11 ordinary prosecutors, were appointed." They added, "Regarding future recruitment of CIO prosecutors, the Personnel Committee plans to discuss and decide on specific methods and timing."
Kim Jin-wook, head of the CIO, stated, "With the appointment of prosecutors, the CIO has transitioned to an investigative system," and added, "Together with the CIO prosecutors, we plan to work towards realizing a corruption-free and just nation through fearless investigations into high-ranking officials' corruption, and to establish a human rights-friendly advanced investigative agency trusted by the public."
