[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Samsung Electronics launched the vehicle LED module 'PixCell LED,' which integrates advanced LED light source technology, on the 15th, targeting the intelligent headlamp (ADB·Adaptive Driving Beam) market used in future vehicles.
PixCell LED implements intelligent headlamp functions, allowing precise control of the headlamps according to the driving conditions of vehicles ahead or oncoming vehicles in the opposite lane. For example, during nighttime driving, it enables more sophisticated control to prevent glare for oncoming vehicles by adjusting the headlamps accordingly.
To achieve this, Samsung Electronics utilized the industry's first 'partition wall structure,' which erects walls between each segment (the smallest unit of a light-emitting element driven individually within a single LED chip). This minimized light interference and realized a contrast ratio of 300:1, three times higher than conventional LEDs.
Additionally, Samsung Electronics integrated over 100 segments into a single LED chip using semiconductor technology, reducing the luminous area to about 1/16 of that of general intelligent headlamp LED modules while securing the brightness required for headlamps. This simplification in design allows the headlamp size to be reduced by 30 to 50%, making it adaptable to various vehicle designs.
Moreover, PixCell LED can adjust the light source according to diverse road regulations by country through software. This enables headlamp manufacturers to shorten the overall process of development, production, and distribution. Samsung Electronics is currently mass-producing PixCell LED and supplied a volume equivalent to 310,000 electric vehicles as of the end of March.
Kim Eonsu, Executive Vice President of Samsung Electronics LED Business Team, said, "We will actively target the expanding intelligent headlamp market by leading with PixCell LED, which provides safety and convenience to everyone during driving," adding, "We will continue to innovate to provide high-quality vehicle light source solutions suitable for future vehicles."
