To Be Presented at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung in the First Half of Next Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] A special exhibition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mun Shin, a sculptor from Changwon, will be held at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung, in the first half of next year.
On the 14th, Changwon City, Gyeongnam, signed a mutual cooperation agreement for co-hosting the '2022 Mun Shin (文信, 1922-1995) 100th Birth Anniversary Special Exhibition' at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung.
Through this agreement, the Changwon City Masan Mun Shin Museum of Art will share all works and materials related to sculptor Mun Shin in its collection with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Based on this, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will investigate and research the artist's life and artistic world and plan and operate the 100th birth anniversary commemorative exhibition.
Mun Shin was born in 1922 (officially registered as 1923) in the Takeo mining area of Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Japan.
At the age of five, he returned to Masan, where his grandmother lived, and grew up there. Despite economic hardships, he left for Japan in 1939 to study art.
Afterward, he boldly moved to France in 1961 and was actively engaged mainly in France until his permanent return to Korea in 1980.
During this period, Mun Shin was recognized on the international stage for his outstanding artistic achievements as a sculptor, not as a painter.
His sculptures are widely known for their 'symmetry,' which embodies the mysteries of the universe and life.
One of his representative works is the 25-meter-high large stainless steel sculpture 'Olympic 1988,' which can be seen at the Seoul Olympic Sculpture Park.
He built the museum he had dreamed of since his youth on the hill in Chusan-dong, Masanhappo-gu, where he spent his boyhood.
Yun Beom-mo, director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, said, "The Changwon City Masan Mun Shin Museum of Art has played a significant role in promoting Mun Shin's artistic achievements for a long time," adding, "To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mun Shin's birth, we will reexamine the artist's life and artistic world and further strengthen collaboration with regional public art museums."
