[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The first case of a blood clot side effect after receiving the AstraZeneca (AZ) COVID-19 vaccine has been reported in Canada. Canadian health authorities stated that the patient is currently recovering at home.

On the 13th (local time), according to Canadian CBC News, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) announced that a woman residing in Quebec showed symptoms of blood clots after receiving the AZ vaccine. This is the first report of blood clot side effects from the AZ vaccine in Canada. Following earlier concerns about blood clot side effects from the AZ vaccine, Canadian health authorities have suspended AstraZeneca vaccinations for those under 55 years of age.

In a statement released that day, PHAC did not disclose specific details such as the woman's age or the timing of the vaccination but explained that she is currently recovering at home. The AZ vaccine associated with the blood clot side effect is known to be the 'Covishield' product manufactured by the Indian vaccine producer Serum Institute.

The Quebec Ministry of Health also confirmed the woman's blood clot case and stated that she is currently receiving treatment at home and is showing good progress. A senior official from the Quebec Ministry of Health said they are paying the utmost attention to side effects related to the AZ vaccine, adding, "We were already aware that such incidents could occur and have been preparing for them."
