It's Still Too Early for Cherry Blossom Ending... Yeongdeungpo-gu's Online Spring Flower Festival Until the 30th

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is operating the ‘2021 Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival’ online platform until the 30th of this month under the slogan ‘Spring for Everyone,’ creating a message of hope together.

This Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival introduces a non-face-to-face online festival platform to announce the beginning of spring and share warm consolation and messages of hope despite the COVID-19 situation.

The Yeongdeungpo Cultural Foundation and XR specialist company ‘VIVE Studios,’ in cooperation and sponsored by Woori Bank, launched the Yeongdeungpo Yeouido Spring Flower Festival online platform, which began its programs sequentially from the 5th.

Unlike existing online festivals, it goes beyond passively watching content without an audience, allowing users to enter a ‘virtual spring flower festival site’ and enjoy participating in the festival.

The online platform consists of five sessions: Island of Spring Flowers, On Stage, Spring Flower Road, Everyone’s Photo Studio, and VR Exhibition.

‘Island of Spring Flowers’ is an interactive experience first encountered on the online platform, featuring a mission adventure to reach the island and a section for sending messages of hope.

By melting ice that covers the screen, clicking on insects and cherry blossom petals, and completing the mission of collecting lost pieces of spring, users gain access to the ‘Island of Spring Flowers.’ Rotating the screen 360 degrees allows users to write messages of hope and view messages left by others in the virtual space.

‘On Stage’ presents diverse video content. The ‘Kwon Jin-ah x Sam Kim Spring Flower Live,’ streamed live on YouTube under the cherry blossom path on the 4th, was screened here on the 12th.

The street view ‘Spring Flower Road,’ which vividly conveys the cherry blossom path, was provided for those unable to attend the offline spring flower festival, showing the blooming to falling of cherry blossoms from various perspectives.

Additionally, the online spring flower festival features ‘Everyone’s Photo Studio,’ where participants share photos filled with spring scenery and emotions from their personal albums, and ‘VR Exhibition,’ where visitors can enjoy local artists’ works on mobile devices.

More detailed information about the festival can be found on the official website. The Yeongdeungpo Cultural Foundation’s SNS offers a ‘Spring for Everyone’ event to enjoy the festival together.

Participation is possible through Instagram.

Meanwhile, the district introduced a limited viewing ‘Spring Flower Walk’ on Yunjung-ro Cherry Blossom Road, which previously attracted 5 million visitors annually, allowing only 72 people per 1 hour and 30 minutes excluding staff.

The ‘Spring Flower Walk,’ where only a small number of randomly selected online pre-registrants could walk the cherry blossom path, received a total of 34,969 applications over three days, with 1,080 selected, recording an average competition rate of 32 to 1.

However, due to early cherry blossom falling, the schedule was moved up from the originally planned 11th to the 7th, concluding the regrettable three-day festival and looking forward to next year.

Yeongdeungpo-gu Mayor Chae Hyun-il said, “Even in the restricted daily life due to COVID-19, we tried a new method hoping to expand the festival as a participatory event that announces the beginning of spring and creates a spring for everyone both online and offline. I hope it will become a creative future-type festival proposing a new model of non-face-to-face festivals in the era of infectious disease spread.”
