[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] “I will donate all the assets of the scholarship foundation.” A retired elder statesman visited the university president’s office.

Former four-term lawmaker Yoo Heung-soo (84) came to make a generous donation to the National Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-soo).

On the morning of the 13th, Yoo visited the president’s office on the 3rd floor of the Pukyong National University headquarters and handed over 300 million KRW in development funds to President Jang Young-soo, asking that it be used to nurture outstanding talent.

He said, “I recently dissolved the Namchon Scholarship Foundation, which I had been operating as chairman, and I am donating all the basic assets of the scholarship foundation to Pukyong National University, a national university in Busan.”

Since establishing the Namchon Scholarship Foundation in 1996, named after his pen name, to foster local talent, Yoo has been providing scholarships to local university students including those at Pukyong National University.

The elderly Yoo has recently been undergoing the dissolution process of the scholarship foundation and has been seeking progressive ways to nurture local talent.

He explained the background of the donation, saying, “I was contemplating how to continue the scholarship foundation’s main purpose of fostering local talent, and upon the recommendation of my longtime friend, former Pukyong National University President Kang Nam-joo, I requested that Pukyong National University take on that role.”

Yoo, who served as the Korean Ambassador to Japan, was a four-term lawmaker representing Busan Nam-gu, where Pukyong National University is located, and has a strong connection with the university, having received an honorary doctorate from Pukyong National University in recognition of his contributions as chairman of the National Assembly’s Unification, Foreign Affairs, and Trade Committee.

He showed exceptional love for Busan by continuously donating to the Namchon Scholarship Foundation and contributing funds to help underprivileged neighbors in the region.

Yoo said, “Having been active domestically and internationally, I have deeply realized the importance of talent. I will continue to take an interest and provide support so that young people who will lead our future can gain diverse experiences and develop their abilities.”

Following Yoo’s donation of development funds, Pukyong National University plans to focus on nurturing talent by providing scholarships named after the Namchon Scholarship Foundation to outstanding students, in accordance with the donor’s wishes.
