[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] Chinese company Huawei announced that it will invest 1 billion dollars (approximately 1.1 trillion KRW) this year in autonomous driving car technology.

According to local media on the 13th, Huawei Chairman Xu Zhijun revealed this to analysts the day before.

Chairman Xu said that Huawei's autonomous driving technology already surpasses Tesla in some aspects. He stated, "With Huawei's technology, it is possible to drive 1,000 km autonomously on city roads without human intervention," adding, "It is much better than Tesla."

However, Huawei reiterated that it will not manufacture cars directly. Chairman Xu explained, "Huawei will help automobile companies make good cars," and added, "We have decided to cooperate with three automakers: Beijing Automotive, Chongqing Changan Automobile, and Guangzhou Automobile."

The sub-brand vehicles of these companies will bear the logo "Huawei Inside," indicating that the vehicles are equipped with Huawei's autonomous driving technology.

Huawei plans to launch sub-brand vehicles together with automakers starting from the fourth quarter of this year. Prior to this, the first model, the Arcfox Alpha S HBT, developed in cooperation with Beijing Automotive Group's BluePark, will be unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show on the 17th.

Facing a crisis due to U.S. sanctions, Huawei is turning its attention to new businesses such as autonomous vehicles and electric cars for survival.

Chairman Xu said, "The impact of the U.S. semiconductor supply ban will continue this year and beyond," adding, "Our goal this year is survival." He also stated, "We do not harbor any illusions that the Biden administration will lift sanctions against Huawei."
