Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of Myanmar
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] The Myanmar military has filed additional charges against State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. It is reported that Suu Kyi has repeatedly requested to meet with her legal team in person.
According to major foreign media on the 12th, Suu Kyi was charged during a court hearing held via video conference on the same day with violating COVID-19 prevention regulations (violation of the Natural Disaster Management Law), her lawyer Min Min So told the press.
With this, Suu Kyi now faces a total of seven criminal charges since being placed under house arrest following the military coup in February. This is the second time she has been charged with violating the Natural Disaster Management Law.
Specifically, she is accused of possessing and using illegally imported walkie-talkies (violation of the Export-Import Law) and violating COVID-19 prevention regulations during the general election process last November. Earlier last month, she was charged with incitement and violation of the Telecommunications Law, followed by additional bribery charges. At the beginning of this month, she was also accused of violating the Official Secrets Act.
If all charges result in convictions, Suu Kyi is expected to face a prison sentence of up to around 40 years. In response, Min Min So stated that Suu Kyi has requested the court to allow her to meet with her legal team in person.
