[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Yangsan City in Gyeongnam announced on the 12th that it will operate a focused period for recovering unclaimed local tax refunds until the end of this month to return unclaimed refunds to taxpayers.
As of the end of last month, there are about 9,500 unclaimed refund cases amounting to 190 million KRW. Most of these refunds, accounting for 98% of the total, are local income tax refunds due to automobile tax prepayment followed by ownership transfer cancellation or national tax corrections.
The city has been making various efforts to return refunds, such as sending local tax refund notices immediately upon occurrence and offsetting against regular or overdue payments, but some remain unclaimed due to taxpayers being unaware of the refunds, indifference due to small amounts, or the inconvenience of procedures.
Accordingly, the city has set a focused promotion period until the end of this month for unclaimed refunds and is strengthening publicity by sending notices to eligible refund recipients in bulk.
Refund inquiry and application can be made through Wetax, the city tax department, or the Kakao channel ‘Yangsan-si Local Tax Refund’. In particular, since last year, with the implementation of the KakaoTalk channel service to enhance taxpayer convenience, refunds can be claimed anytime and anywhere by simply entering the name, date of birth, and account number.
A Yangsan City official said, “We hope that active refunding of unclaimed funds will help taxpayers who are struggling due to COVID-19 even a little,” and urged taxpayers to actively check and confirm their refunds.
