Installation of 8.620Km Pictogram Sign Blocks on Achasan-ro, Gwangnaru-ro, etc. to Maintain Safe Distance Between Cyclists and Pedestrians... Expansion of Bicycle Parking at Oksu and Hanyang University Stations with High Bicycle Demand Along the Han River and Roads

Seongdong-gu Installs 8.620Km of Pictogram Sign Blocks...Creating a Bicycle-Friendly City The installed appearance of Seongdong-gu pictogram sign blocks

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (District Mayor Jeong Won-oh) will install 180 bicycle pictogram sign blocks on bicycle lanes along a total of 7.8 km of roads, including Achasan-ro and Gwangnaru-ro in Seongsu-dong, from this month through the first half of the year.

The sign blocks are made with pictorial characters that are easy for anyone to understand, indicating that pedestrians and bicycles can share the bicycle lanes. The blocks themselves are made of colored materials, providing excellent durability and vivid colors with high visibility, which can reduce the risk of bicycle accidents.

The district secured a budget of 100 million KRW from Seoul City this year to actively introduce pictogram sign blocks, which have higher visibility satisfaction, replacing the existing bicycle lane signs that were difficult to recognize due to the proliferation of commercial signs.

Accordingly, following the installation of pictogram sign blocks last year along the 820m bicycle lane from Majang 2 Bridge to Majang Underpass, the district plans to install pictogram sign blocks on a total of 8.620 km of shared lanes by this year.

In the COVID-19 era, as bicycles are gaining attention as a “contactless transportation mode,” bicycle users and pedestrians will be able to enjoy a safe walking path while maintaining mutual safety distances through pictogram sign blocks installed every 50 meters.

Additionally, the district will significantly expand bicycle racks. Last year, 648 bicycle racks were newly installed and maintained at 18 locations with high bicycle demand, such as under the bridge between Seongsu Station and Ttukseom Station along Achasan-ro. This year, the plan is to expand bicycle racks focusing on areas like Oksu Station and Hanyang University Station.

Last year, the district improved urban aesthetics by removing old roof-type bicycle racks under station bridges and installing open-type bicycle racks.

Moreover, the district expanded bicycle racks around subway stations with high bicycle usage, replaced and installed 13 bicycle air pumps at 13 locations including Seongsu-dong Shoe Theme Park, and established a safe bicycle infrastructure. Based on this, the district plans to actively promote bicycle use this year as well.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We will continue to strive to build safe and convenient bicycle infrastructure so that our residents can safely ride bicycles, which are green transportation modes in the post-COVID-19 era.”
