Discussion on Reconstruction Support Measures at the 1st Korea-Afghanistan Policy Consultation Meeting

[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] South Korea and Afghanistan discussed cooperation measures for Afghanistan's peace and reconstruction at their first high-level regular consultation between the two countries.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 7th, the 1st Korea-Afghanistan Policy Consultation was held that morning, with Lee Kyung-chul, Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Mirwais Nab, Deputy Minister for Political Affairs of the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs visiting South Korea, serving as chief representatives. In the afternoon, Choi Jong-moon, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Deputy Minister Nab.

Both sides agreed at the consultation that a political solution to end the long-standing conflict should be established through progress in ongoing internal negotiations in Afghanistan.

They also reviewed bilateral development cooperation projects promoted by the Korean government, including COVID-19 response support, promotion of gender equality, soybean projects, and sharing economic development experiences.

Deputy Minister Nab stated at the consultation, "Korea's support is greatly contributing to reconstruction," and pledged, "We will support Korea in the 2024-2025 term election for non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council."
