Government Opens Government Work Evaluation Support Center... Eliminating 'Duplicate Evaluations'

[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Son Seonhee] The Office for Government Policy Coordination announced on the 6th that it will establish the 'Government Performance Evaluation Support Center' and outsource its operation to the Korea Institute of Public Administration. The Government Performance Evaluation Support Center is expected to support roles such as overall coordination of various evaluation systems within the government and strengthening the expertise of government performance evaluations targeting central ministries.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination and the Korea Institute of Public Administration announced that they held the opening ceremony of the Government Performance Evaluation Support Center at the Korea Institute of Public Administration located in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the same day. Attendees at the opening ceremony included Koo Yoon-cheol, head of the Office for Government Policy Coordination; Ahn Seong-ho, president of the Korea Institute of Public Administration; Namgung Geun, chairman of the Government Performance Evaluation Committee; Jung Hae-gu, chairman of the National Research Council for Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences; and Park Soon-ae, president of the Korean Association for Public Administration.

The government stated that it will use the opening of this center as an opportunity to operate evaluation systems within the government more efficiently in the future. Currently, in addition to government performance evaluations, about 200 evaluations are being conducted across 25 ministries, and the government plans to reduce inefficiencies and the burden on evaluated institutions caused by overlapping similar evaluations.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination plans to apply a sunset clause to unnecessary evaluation systems based on the analysis results of overlap between evaluations and the necessity for continuation or improvement.

Head Koo of the Office for Government Policy Coordination said, "Government performance evaluation is an important means that is utilized as a driving force for national administration by closely examining and scrutinizing policy planning, execution, and effects," and urged, "Based on the professional support of the center, please further develop government performance evaluation tasks and lead government change and innovation."
