[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Hyun-joo] "If you became a movie actor, as a woman, as an actress, I was curious about what style you would prefer. Would you prefer a sexy star like Marilyn Monroe, or would you want to act in a pure and delicate style like Olivia Hussey? I would like to ask that question." (Bae Hyun-jin, People Power Party lawmaker)
"More than that, there was an actress in the movie 'Salt.' Angelina Jolie. I prefer Angelina Jolie in Salt. She also appeared in Tomb Raider. She's brave, spirited. She beats men." (Hong Joon-pyo, independent lawmaker)
Independent lawmaker Hong Joon-pyo opened a Clubhouse for the first time on the 10th, talking about movies, dramas, and music. He communicated by introducing his life movie, the most enjoyable drama he has watched, and music he likes to listen to.
From 'Forrest Gump' to the 'Reply' series
Hong's life movie is 'Forrest Gump.' It was a movie he watched on a plane returning from the United States. It changed his movie taste, which mainly favored spectacular films. He said, "While watching the movie, I wondered if there could be a happy life living so simply and innocently all my life." He said he often visits the cinema on weekend evenings with his two sons.
The first movie in his life was 'When the Acacia Petals Bloom,' released in 1962. Hong said, "I remember watching it for the first time at a rural tent theater when I was 6 or 7 years old," adding, "I remember the first movie I saw 60 years ago." The film is about the independence army.
When he has time, Hong often watches movies and dramas through Netflix. Among them, he thought the Reply series was a "good drama." He said, "While watching 1994, there was a scene at the end that really made me burst out laughing. There was a fierce debate and fight over the integrated name of Sacheon and Samcheonpo in Gyeongnam," adding, "A Yonsei University student from Seoul went to his hometown Sacheon, and when a debate broke out at the village hall, people asked him, as a student from a top university in Seoul, to give his opinion. Suddenly, he suggested that since Samcheonpo and Sacheon combined would be Chilcheon, they should call it Chilcheonpo. That was said."
Hong said, "The series I was really absorbed in was the 1988 series," adding, "In South Korea, like the mischievous kids in Ssangmun-dong alleys, people curse each other but care for and help each other. When a friend faces difficulties, they unite and help no matter what. How great would it be if our country became like that?" He praised the scriptwriter for many precious lines in the script.
Introducing 5 songs including Yang Ji-eun's 'Brush' and BTS's 'Dynamite'
Hong said, "I was recommended to try something like the old 'Starry Night,'" and played a total of five songs on Clubhouse that day.
The first song played was 'Brush' by Yang Ji-eun, the winner of Miss Trot 2. The second song was Jang Yoon-jung's 'Chohon.' It was the campaign song he listened to most when running in Daegu during the last general election. Hong recalled, "Among the 12 districts, most were areas where incumbent lawmakers were running for re-election while I was party leader, so I wondered if I could compete with the incumbents even if I ran as an independent. Only in Suseong-eul was there no incumbent running, and the candidate had not been decided at that time."

When the movie 'Ode to My Father' was mentioned, he selected Youngtak's 'A Glass of Makgeolli.' He then played BTS's 'Dynamite.' The intention was to listen to songs from the current generation after listening to songs from the father's generation. Hong said, "Hallyu, which only worked in Southeast Asia, has become a global phenomenon," adding, "BTS has become a world treasure."
The last song was Nam Sang-gyu's 'Chupungnyeong.' Hong said, "When I was 18, I took a night train from Dongdaegu Station to Seoul," adding, "I had no friends or relatives in Seoul, no acquaintances, and I came alone with only 14,000 won, riding the train at night over Chupungnyeong, thinking about this song."
The emotionally rich Hong Joon-pyo Clubhouse will be held every Thursday at 8 p.m. starting next week, changing the time slot. Since it is impossible to meet the public directly and talk due to COVID-19, Clubhouse is expected to be an alternative means for Hong. As Clubhouse has been prepared as a follow-up to the 'Political Busking' he used to conduct, the topics will shift to political issues.
On the 13th, Hong announced on his Facebook, "This week, we decided to discuss the hottest recent issue, the real estate problem," adding, "Hong Joon-pyo's Clubhouse, which gathers the thoughts of the people to create the Korea we dream of, will be broadcast live on TV Hong Kakola until the Android version is launched."
