From Hanok Lectures to Mandarin Duck Sculpture Painting... How About Experiencing Traditional Culture This Spring at Sangchonjae?

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] After ‘Gyeongchip,’ the solar term when frogs awaken from hibernation, we are approaching the solar term ‘Chunbun’ (Spring Equinox).

Welcoming the swiftly approaching spring, Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) has prepared a variety of programs at the Hanok cultural space Sangchonjae, where visitors can personally experience the excellence and beauty of our traditional culture while feeling the charm of Hanok.

The 'Sangchonjae Spring Traditional Education' held in April and May is composed of lectures themed around Hanok and various one-day experiences planned for Family Month.

First, in April, an education program under the theme ‘Our Hanok at Sangchonjae’ will be held.

From April 6, you can attend ▲“Old Hanok and Modern Hanok,” a lecture by experts on the history and architecture of Hanok. Starting April 14, after theoretical education, you can experience traditional Dancheong painting and complete a pendant work in ▲“Meeting Dancheong.” On April 15, the course ▲“Hanok Lecture and Roof Tile Succulent Art,” where you listen to Hanok theory and create succulent art using discarded roof tiles, will begin.

In May, Family Month, a one-day traditional experience program called ‘Today, Tradition’ open to all ages will be operated.

On Children’s Day, May 5, programs such as ▲“Sangchonjae Traditional Outing”: folk painting coloring experience, traditional games, and Hanbok experience will be offered. On Parents’ Day, May 8, a program to create ▲calligraphy frames by writing messages of gratitude will be presented.

To commemorate Jongno Residents’ Day on May 9, ▲“Jongno in My Hand,” making keyrings and hanji lanterns, will be held. On May 15, in celebration of Coming-of-Age Day, ▲“Making Jinju Pinecone Hairpins” will take place.

On May 22, for Couples’ Day, ▲“Interior Mandarin Duck Carving Coloring” will begin, where participants will color wooden mandarin duck carvings for interior decoration.

This spring traditional education will be conducted face-to-face while strictly adhering to COVID-19 prevention guidelines such as wearing masks, checking normal body temperature, and maintaining attendance logs. However, if prevention measures are strengthened, classes may be switched to non-face-to-face online sessions.

More detailed information on the curriculum, tuition fees, and schedules for each program can be found on the Jongno Cultural Foundation website. For inquiries and applications, please contact Sangchonjae or the Cultural Business Team of the Jongno Cultural Foundation.

Meanwhile, Sangchonjae (12-11 Jahamun-ro 17-gil), where the education is held, is a traditional Hanok space restored and opened by Jongno-gu after carefully renovating a long-abandoned Hanok house owned by the National Police Agency.

It opened in June 2017 and consists of three buildings?main quarters, guest quarters, and annex?covering a total floor area of 138.55㎡ on one above-ground floor.

Built in the traditional style of the late 19th century, it contributes to preserving Hanok culture, which is gradually disappearing due to urban development and commercialization, and leads efforts to promote the excellence of Hangul by revitalizing the regional identity as the birthplace of King Sejong the Great.

The district has operated education programs here to foster local residents’ interest and attachment to traditional culture, such as proper ways to wear Hanbok and tea ceremony experiences.

District Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “I recommend enjoying the various programs held at Sangchonjae this coming spring, taking a moment of relaxation from the tiring daily life and falling into the charm of traditional culture.”
