[Asia Economy Reporter Ki Ha-young] Amid the absence of an official statement from the British royal family regarding the bombshell remarks made by Prince Harry and his wife, public opinion is growing that issues such as the racism they raised should not be overlooked.
On the 9th (local time), The Times reported that the Queen did not sign a prepared statement the night before the couple's interview was broadcast in the UK. Initially, the statement was intended to ease tensions by expressing the family's love and concern for the couple, but it is now expected that the Queen will take more time before responding.
The royal family is closely monitoring this issue, considered the biggest crisis since the divorce of Charles and Diana. BBC and the Daily Mail reported on the same day that the Queen held an emergency meeting with Prince Charles and Prince William. A BBC royal correspondent said, "It will become increasingly difficult for the royal family to remain silent," but added, "They do not want to rush into saying anything."
UK Sky News also assessed that despite the negative perception surrounding the couple's interview itself, the royal family will find it difficult to avoid responding to issues related to racism.
The UK Labour Party has urged the royal family to take a stance on the allegations of racism. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Conservative Party officials have remained reserved, offering only general responses respecting the Queen as she carries out her official duties.
