Comprehensive Efforts for Systematic Maintenance of Sewage Facilities in Dongjak-gu

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Changwoo Lee) announced that it will focus all efforts on sewer facility maintenance projects to enhance urban flood response capabilities against heavy summer rains and protect residents' safety until December.

The district will invest a total of 21.5 billion KRW this year to inspect ▲public sewer pipelines ▲rainwater inlets ▲sewage treatment facilities throughout the district.

First, it will significantly improve the drainage system by repairing aging and damaged sewer pipelines including 7 km of sewer pipes in the Sadang drainage basin and Imok drainage basin, which are flood damage priority management areas in Sadang-dong, 700 m of sewer pipelines around Isu Station, and 500 m of sewer pipelines near Daebang Station and one other location.

Along with this, repair work will be carried out on rectangular culverts in Sadang-dong, Sangdo-dong, and the upper stream area of Daebangcheon, where aging is progressing, to enhance durability, improve residents' living environment, and prevent safety accidents.

In particular, the Sadang-dong area has been undergoing a project to resolve habitual flooding by repairing a total of 19 km of sewer pipelines with an investment of 30.7 billion KRW over five years from 2018 to next year.

Additionally, dredging and odor removal cleaning projects will be promoted targeting the entire area’s approximately 334 km of sewer pipelines and 23,723 rainwater inlets to prevent disasters caused by sewage backflow and odors.

Regular safety inspections will be conducted on six rainwater pumping stations and 13 sluice gates, and rapid repairs and reinforcements will be made on defective parts to ensure normal operation during heavy rains.

Furthermore, to establish a swift and systematic response system against summer typhoons and heavy rains, the district will operate the Flood and Wind Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters 24 hours a day for five months until October 15, following a one-month flood prevention preparatory period starting April 15.

Kim Sanghoon, Head of the Water Management Division, said, “We will prevent summer flood damage in advance through proactive maintenance of various sewer facilities such as sewer pipelines and rainwater pumping stations,” and added, “Through thorough management of sewer facilities, we will create a pleasant Dongjak where residents can live with peace of mind.”
