Yeonggwang-gun 'Small Cinema' Opens... After Over 30 Years

[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim Junsung) announced on the 5th that the local movie theater, which disappeared into history in the 1990s, was renovated and reopened as the ‘Yeonggwang Small Theater’ on the 4th.

The opening ceremony was attended by a minimal number of people, including the governor and county council members, in accordance with government social distancing guidelines due to COVID-19.

In particular, representatives of the residents experienced the theater and requested that it be made comfortable and safe for the residents to use, while also inspecting the interior and exterior of the facility.

The small theater screened the opening commemorative films: ‘Minari,’ which swept awards from the Sundance Film Festival Jury Prize to the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and ranked first at the box office from its first day of release, and ‘Confession,’ a film addressing child abuse issues with warm emotions that transcend age.

It is located on the first floor (494㎡) and consists of Theater 1 with 49 seats, Theater 2 with 60 seats, a ticket office, a concession stand, and a rest area. Films are shown in 2D (6,000 KRW) or 3D (8,000 KRW) depending on the work.

Movie tickets can be purchased at the on-site ticket office or online and via mobile on the Yeonggwang Small Theater website. Screening times and audience capacity are operated flexibly according to COVID-19 social distancing levels and guidelines.

Governor Kim Junsung said, “Although it is regrettable that many residents could not join to celebrate the reopening of the Yeonggwang Small Theater, revived after more than 30 years, I am glad that we can provide a cultural space for rest and healing to residents tired of daily life along with COVID-19 depression.”
