[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] Two luxury cars with the same license plate were spotted parked side by side in the heart of Hanoi, Vietnam, prompting the police to launch an investigation.

According to local Vietnamese media such as Tuoi Tre on the 3rd, a photo showing two black Mercedes-Benz cars with the same license plate parked side by side on Van Phuc Street in Hanoi was posted on social networking services (SNS) on the 28th of last month.

The license plates of the two cars were exactly the same in numbers and letters, "30E-488.16," differing only in format. Both vehicles were the same model of black Mercedes-Benz.

As the photo spread on SNS, the police seized both cars and summoned the owners to determine which vehicle had the forged license plate.

The vehicle originally issued the "30E-488.16" license plate, first registered in 2012, was identified as a 2011 Mercedes-Benz owned by a company located in Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi. Ownership was later transferred to a 56-year-old man.

The Hadong Provincial Police Agency stated that they are investigating the purpose of using the forged license plate and will take action according to current laws.

Under current Vietnamese regulations, drivers using fake license plates can be fined between 4 million dong (approximately 20,000 KRW) and 6 million dong (approximately 30,000 KRW), and their driving licenses can be suspended for one to three months.
