By the End of March, 487 Themed Flower Beds and 42,000 Hanging Flower Pots to Be Created
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 5th that it will create "Spring Flower Streets" along 120 routes throughout Seoul. The Spring Flower Streets will be decorated with 42,000 hanging flower pots and 487 themed flower beds featuring representative spring flowers such as daffodils, daisies, lupines, anemones, and wave petunias.
The Spring Flower Streets are scheduled to be completed by the end of March, starting from Euljiro in Jung-gu on the 5th. The plan is to fill various areas with flowers, from alleys in front of homes to major downtown areas, arterial roads, commercial districts like Itaewon and Dongdaemun DDP that have been subdued due to COVID-19, as well as around COVID-19 dedicated hospitals and screening clinics.
Seoul also aims to contribute to revitalizing the landscaping and floriculture industries, which have been weakened due to the downsizing of entrance and graduation ceremonies caused by COVID-19. Street flower beds will be installed under street trees or in separate idle spaces, or themed flower beds with diverse flowers will be created. If there are structures on the streets, hanging flower pots will be hung, and in places where flower beds are difficult to create, street flower pots will be placed. Along the waiting lines at screening clinics, street flower pots will be placed, and at the entrances around COVID-19 dedicated hospitals, street flower beds or hanging flower pots will be installed. Depressed commercial districts and neighborhood alleys will have flower beds created mainly in idle spaces.
Previously, last year, Seoul planted 971,000 flowers along a total of 120 routes (156 km in length, 61,957㎡) and sowed 620 kg of flower seeds along riversides and other areas, creating flower paths throughout the city.
Choi Yoon-jong, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Green City Bureau, said, “We hope that the colorful flower paths created throughout the streets will provide some comfort to citizens exhausted by more than a year of COVID-19,” and added, “This spring, we hope people enjoy safe flower viewing near their homes and experience small but certain happiness (소확행, sohwakhaeng).”
