[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunjin Jeong] On the 4th, Bloomberg News, citing sources, reported that Japanese video game company Nintendo is expected to equip its game console 'Switch' with Samsung Display's OLED panel, which features a larger screen.

According to the report, Samsung Display is said to begin mass production as early as early June of a 7-inch OLED panel with a resolution of 720 pixels for the Nintendo Switch. The initial monthly production target is about 1 million units, and the Samsung OLED panels are expected to be sent to Nintendo's assembly line around July, sources said.

Bloomberg analyzed, "Nintendo aims to widen the gap with competing consoles such as Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation by releasing a Switch with a larger screen," adding, "However, the Nintendo Switch has already been on the market for over five years, while both Xbox and PlayStation have their latest models."

The OLED panel to be installed this time is a rigid type, commonly used in high-end smartphones, and is expected to provide clearer image quality when connected to a TV with 4K UHD graphics.

Bloomberg explained, "The price of rigid OLED panels is falling due to oversupply, so this deal is beneficial for Samsung Display," adding that securing customers like Nintendo would be helpful. It also noted that Nintendo might receive assistance in securing scarce semiconductors through Samsung Display.
