[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] Amid the nationwide trend of 'chabak' (car camping) following COVID-19, the public parking lot at Najung Beach in Gyeongju is being transformed into a formal camping site.

Gyeongju City announced on the 4th that it will create an auto camping site at the public parking lot area of Najung Beach in Gampo-eup, investing 1.84 billion KRW, with completion targeted by the end of November.

The newly established 'Najung Beach Auto Camping Site' will feature a total of 48 camping sites, including 39 caravan spots and 9 auto spots, along with convenience facilities such as large restrooms and shower rooms. Additionally, separate electrical facilities will be installed at each camping site.

For visitor safety, CCTV will be installed, and three water supply sinks and a lawn yard will also be created. The city plans to conduct a pilot operation after the site is completed by the end of November and aims to officially open it as early as January next year.

The facility will be operated by the Gyeongju City Facilities Management Corporation, but the village residents will manage it under a consignment operation system. Usage fees are expected to be finalized considering both public interest and profitability, at around 25,000 KRW per night on weekdays (Sunday to Thursday) and 30,000 KRW on weekends (Friday to Saturday).

The Najung Beach public parking lot is known to be popular among car campers due to its good transportation accessibility, equipped convenience facilities such as restrooms, and its scenic surroundings by the sea.

Mayor Joo Nak-young of Gyeongju said, "Through the Najung Beach Auto Camping Site project, we will establish a national leisure camping site that incorporates the natural scenery of Najung Fine Sand Beach, creating a stay-type tourism experience space that families can enjoy."
