Installation of Energy-Saving Equipment Such as Geothermal Systems, Solar Power Generation Facilities, and Waste Heat Recovery Equipment
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Government Complex Management Headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety is actively introducing renewable energy and advanced energy-saving technologies to the new Government Sejong Office Building, aiming to establish it as a public building representing the Green New Deal.
On the 4th, the Government Complex Management Headquarters announced that it will fully install energy-saving facilities such as geothermal systems, solar power generation equipment, waste heat recovery devices, as well as energy storage systems and building energy management systems.
Through geothermal systems and solar power generation equipment, the building will be constructed as a top-grade energy efficiency building producing and utilizing 1,970 TOE (tons of oil equivalent) of renewable energy. Considering the site conditions, a total of 766 vertical (200m high) geothermal heat exchangers will be installed across the entire site using drilling methods, supplying 100% of the central heating and cooling heat energy source through the geothermal system.
On the entire rooftop, photovoltaic (PV) solar panels will be used to generate approximately 288 kW of electricity, which will be utilized for lighting and office equipment within the building. Additionally, 24,218 high-efficiency LED lights will be installed, and 29 air handling units and 45 air circulators equipped with waste heat recovery devices will be applied to recover and recycle energy from air exhausted from indoors to outdoors. Furthermore, rainwater utilization facilities and energy storage systems (1,000 kWh) will be installed to reduce electricity and water consumption.
Moreover, the Government Complex Management Headquarters plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by introducing energy management systems (BEMS) to efficiently and systematically manage the energy used within the building. In addition, a total of 14 electric vehicle chargers (6 rapid chargers and 8 slow chargers), more than twice the legally required number, will be installed to minimize user inconvenience and create an environment that promotes the spread of eco-friendly vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Government Sejong New Office Building construction project is part of the central administrative agency relocation project, which began construction in April last year and is scheduled for completion in August 2022. With a total project cost of 330 billion KRW, the building will have a total floor area of 134,489㎡ (3 basement floors, 15 above-ground floors) and will accommodate approximately 2,400 employees.
Jo So-yeon, head of the Government Complex Management Headquarters, stated, “The Government Sejong New Office Building is a structure that integrates cutting-edge energy-saving technologies,” and added, “We will ensure safe construction so that the newly established government office building can become a public building representing the Green New Deal.”
