[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] U.S. Intel has been ordered to pay damages amounting to $2.18 billion (approximately 2.4067 trillion KRW) for patent infringement related to semiconductor manufacturing.
According to Bloomberg on the 2nd (local time), the U.S. District Court in Waco, Texas ruled based on a jury verdict that Intel infringed on two semiconductor manufacturing patents held by VLSI Technology.
The jury assessed damages of $1.5 billion for one patent infringement and $675 million for the other.
This amount corresponds to about half of Intel's net profit of $5.9 billion in the fourth quarter of last year.
VLSI, established about four years ago, is known to have acquired these patents in 2019 from semiconductor manufacturer NXP, which had previously purchased them from another company.
Michael Stolaske, CEO of VLSI, stated in a press release that day, "We are pleased that the jury recognized the value of the innovation reflected in the patents."
Intel said it "disagrees" and plans to appeal.
