[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Nosik] Namwon City in Jeonbuk has taken its first step toward a carbon-neutral society by declaring the 2050 carbon neutrality goal, the first in Jeonbuk.
As part of the comprehensive Green New Deal plan toward a carbon-neutral society, the city declared Namwon City's 2050 carbon neutrality goal on the 3rd in a non-face-to-face format at the city hall conference room.
Namwon City's 2050 carbon neutrality declaration was prepared to aim for a carbon-neutral (Net-zero) society to achieve a bold green transition of the economy and society, as major advanced countries declare carbon neutrality and strengthen efforts to respond to the climate crisis as a low-carbon economic strategy, while domestic greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase.
On this day, four visions including Namwon City's 2050 carbon neutrality were announced in the declaration.
The declaration set three major goals: ▲ a 2050 carbon-neutral city achieved together with citizens, a green creative city where citizens are happy, and a pleasant natural ecological city, and promoted detailed action plans to reduce greenhouse gases ▲ established an institutional system to overcome this crisis together with citizens ▲ established an energy transition plan aiming for regional energy self-sufficiency and implemented it step-by-step ▲ included a strong will to promote a carbon-neutral society, including building a social safety net so that all citizens can live safe and happy lives from the climate crisis.
With this declaration, the city plans to promote various strategies to overcome both the economic crisis caused by COVID-19 and the climate and environmental crises simultaneously.
Lee Hwan-joo, mayor of Namwon City, said, “Through the declaration of Namwon City's 2050 carbon neutrality goal, we have presented the 'first step toward a carbon-neutral society' as Namwon City's Green New Deal vision,” adding, “We will concentrate all administrative capabilities to systematically promote the climate crisis response and Namwon-type Green New Deal through roadmap establishment.”
