[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City's public Wi-Fi expansion policy is analyzed to have led to a reduction in communication costs for local citizens.
According to the city on the 3rd, as of last year, 22 million citizens accessed public Wi-Fi, and the estimated Wi-Fi usage amount (communication fees) they used is around 4.6 billion KRW.
Currently, in Daejeon, public Wi-Fi is available at 2,564 locations including city buses and public places.
Additionally, the city plans to add public Wi-Fi at 3,000 locations by 2025 in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and ICT.
First, this year, the city will install public Wi-Fi at 634 citizen-oriented public places frequently used by citizens, such as bus stops and parks.
Also, at 456 locations where outdated Wi-Fi was installed before 2018, the city plans to replace and install the latest devices and ultra-high-speed internet lines (GB-level) to improve the service so that even when many users connect simultaneously, there will be no inconvenience such as reduced internet speed.
Yoo Deuk-won, Director of Planning and Coordination, said, “The city will expand public Wi-Fi not only in multi-use facilities but also in welfare facilities where information-vulnerable groups are concentrated, and improve the quality of outdated Wi-Fi. Through this, we will strive to create an environment where citizens can use Wi-Fi anywhere in public places without additional payment.”
