[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Kia announced on the 2nd that it sold a total of 211,177 vehicles last month, including 37,583 units domestically and 172,594 units overseas, marking a 7.0% increase compared to the same period last year. Compared to the previous year, domestic sales increased by 31.0%, while overseas sales rose by 2.9%.
Kia attributed the increase in sales to strong performance of new models such as the Carnival and K5, as well as the base effect from last year's production disruptions and poor sales performance caused by COVID-19.
Domestically, the Carnival sold 6,153 units last month, securing the top spot in Kia's monthly sales for six consecutive months. Passenger car models sold a total of 14,223 units, including 5,547 units of the K5, 2,691 units of the Morning, and 2,266 units of the Ray. Recreational vehicles (RVs), including the Carnival, sold a total of 18,297 units, with 4,945 units of the Sorento and 3,585 units of the Seltos. Commercial models sold a total of 5,063 units, including 4,918 units of the Bongo III, combining bus and truck sales.
Overseas, the Sportage led with 25,424 units sold, followed by the Seltos with 23,034 units, and the Rio (Pride) with 18,417 units.
A Kia official stated, "Although management uncertainty has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will achieve a major transformation toward new growth engines by leading with competitive new volume models such as the next-generation electric vehicles built on an exclusive electric vehicle platform, the K8 (successor to the K7), and the 5th generation Sportage."
