[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) will conduct the ‘2021 Urban Regeneration Resident Contest’ from February 8 to March 26 to revitalize the community in the Songjeong and Majang urban regeneration areas.

This contest project was prepared as part of efforts to increase local residents’ interest and participation in urban regeneration projects, enabling residents themselves to identify various local issues, form resident groups, and solve regional agendas.

The resident contest project, where residents propose ideas and lead initiatives, is an important project that faithfully reflects residents’ voices in urban regeneration projects, laying the foundation for urban regeneration such as resident harmony and community recovery. Last year, the Songjeong and Majang urban regeneration resident contest projects saw active communication among residents and talent donations through various educational activities such as calligraphy, barista classes, alley revitalization, and village radio.

In particular, the Songjeong urban regeneration project is expected to accelerate urban regeneration activation with the development of a BI and the establishment of a distinctive image, following the approval of the Urban Regeneration Activation Plan (draft) by the Seoul Urban Regeneration Committee on December 17 last year.

The resident contest recruitment fields are divided into ‘General Contest,’ which focuses on projects that can be smoothly conducted even in the post-COVID-19 era and involve various community revitalization projects by local residents, and ‘Planned Contest,’ which discovers and executes projects on specific professional themes.

The General Contest supports up to 5 million KRW for groups of five or more local residents or living area members, and the Planned Contest supports up to 10 million KRW.

Project contents include various urban regeneration-related projects such as publishing local promotional booklets, village events, senior care, home repair schools, and garden gardening, as well as specialized projects like rooftop gardens and energy-saving practices, and projects to activate shared resident spaces.

The contest period differs by target area: for Songjeong urban regeneration, it is from February 8 to March 5, and for Majang urban regeneration, from March 1 to 26.

The Urban Regeneration Field Support Center plans to provide pre-consultations during the contest period for residents interested in applying. Residents or groups wishing to participate can find detailed information on the Seongdong-gu Office website and the Songjeong Urban Regeneration Field Support Center blog.

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We will actively support urban regeneration with residents so that it can continue to be revitalized even in the post-COVID-19 era,” and added, “We hope for the interest and participation of residents so that various resident contest projects suitable for local characteristics can be discovered and the foundation for self-sustained regional regeneration can be strengthened.”
