[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Lee Nak-yeon, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said regarding the supplementary budget bill for the 4th disaster relief fund, which newly includes special employment workers, freelance workers, and corporate taxi drivers, "We have made efforts to minimize blind spots that were not covered by the protection system."
On the afternoon of the 28th, at a high-level party-government meeting held at the National Assembly, Lee said, "The party, government, and Blue House have discussed this supplementary budget bill based on three principles: broader, thicker, and faster. It seems that the framework of the supplementary budget bill has been prepared faithfully according to these three principles." He specifically mentioned the inclusion of special employment workers, freelance workers, and corporate taxi drivers as new beneficiaries, stating, "It seems that approximately 2 million additional people who were not previously eligible are now included."
Lee explained, "The number of people eligible for disaster relief funds among businesses subject to closure or restrictions has been significantly expanded," adding, "The amount received has also been increased so that it can be broader and thicker at the same time."
Lee said, "The lesson learned from this is that the limitations of the system can be overcome through effort," and added, "I hope that the party, government, and Blue House will continue to be sensitive to the suffering of the people by learning from this experience." He also stated, "We will do our best to review the supplementary budget bill as quickly as possible once it is submitted to the National Assembly within this week, so that it can help the people as soon as possible."
