Nam Gu-jun Appointed as Head of National Investigation Headquarters: "Prioritizing Human Rights and Fieldwork, Realizing 'People-Centered Responsible Investigation'"

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] On the afternoon of the 26th, the National Police Agency held the inauguration ceremony of Nam Gu-jun (53), the first head of the National Investigation Headquarters, at the police agency building in Migeun-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.

In his inaugural speech, Director Nam said, "I have been entrusted with the important role of head of the National Investigation Headquarters at a historic turning point opening a new era," adding, "I feel a heavy sense of mission and responsibility rather than joy and honor."

Director Nam first presented the establishment of a human rights-friendly investigative environment and the strengthening of fairness and professionalism in police investigations as key tasks. He emphasized, "To guarantee the basic rights of the people, I will comprehensively redesign related regulations and systems," and "I will inspect whether there are any vulnerabilities in the investigative procedures from the public's perspective and prepare improvement measures." He also expressed his determination to enhance the completeness of investigations through improvements in the personnel system, systematic education, and the advancement of the review system at each stage of investigation.

He also promised "restorative police activities" that view the investigation process from the victim's perspective and "strong investigative activities" to thoroughly eradicate crime. Director Nam said, "I send respect and trust to my colleagues who are sweating hard on the front lines," and pledged, "I will be a director who supports you."

The inauguration ceremony was held with a minimized number of attendees, including the National Investigation Headquarters leadership, due to the spread of COVID-19. Director Nam plans to receive reports on current issues and visit frontline investigation sites to communicate with investigators as he embarks on his full-scale activities.
