[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, is promoting an urban regeneration New Deal project in the Oksan district, which serves as the central area of Sancheong-eup.

On the 25th, Sancheong-gun announced that it held the launch ceremony of the Oksan district urban regeneration New Deal project residents' council and a residents' briefing session at the Sancheong-eup office.

This briefing session was organized to establish an urban regeneration activation plan for the Oksan district centered around the Sancheong Market.

The event proceeded in the order of an explanation of the Oksan district urban regeneration New Deal project contest, the launch ceremony of the residents' council, guidance on the council’s operation schedule, Q&A, and collection of opinions.

The Oksan district is the urban area of Sancheong-eup, including Hanmaeum Park and Sancheong Bus Terminal, centered around Sancheong Market (general neighborhood type), located right in front of the Sancheong-gun office.

Although it is the central business concentration area of Sancheong-gun, signs of decline in the old downtown have recently appeared, making it a region in need of functional recovery and strengthening of residents' capabilities.

The county is preparing to establish plans targeting a total area of 148,530㎡ in the district, aiming to be selected for the ‘2021 Urban Regeneration New Deal Project’ contest with a total project cost of 16.7 billion KRW.

Accordingly, they plan to steadily carry out related preliminary procedures such as holding residents' briefing sessions and workshops, and consulting for the establishment of activation plans.

At the briefing session, Professor Seo Yoo-seok from the Department of Architecture at Changwon National University attended as the general coordinator for the Oksan district urban regeneration activation plan, enhancing residents' understanding of the urban regeneration project explanation, contest procedures, and the necessity of the residents' council.

During the briefing, residents and project stakeholders participated in a field discussion-style Q&A and opinion collection session. Following this, at the launch ceremony of the residents' council, Hwang Sam-yong, chairman of the Sancheong Market Prosperity Association, was appointed as the chairman of the Oksan district residents' council.

Chairman Hwang said, “We will actively engage to ensure selection in the urban regeneration contest project. In particular, we will listen to residents' opinions and unite our intentions so that our Oksan district can fulfill its role as the center of Sancheong-gun.”

The county plans to actively reflect the village agendas and local issues presented at the briefing session in the Oksan district urban regeneration New Deal project.

A county official said, “Through this Oksan district urban regeneration residents' briefing session, we were able to hear high-quality opinions on the unique characteristics and local issues of the Oksan district. We will incorporate projects that residents empathize with and that the local community can participate in into the urban regeneration activation plan, and strive to achieve good results in this year’s New Deal project contest.”
