Damyang-gun Hosts 'Sajimalgae Ibyanghage' Campaign to Promote Adoption of Abandoned Animals

[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Last year, the number of abandoned animals nationwide was estimated to be over 130,000, and the number of abandoned animals in Damyang-gun was 284, showing an increase of more than 160% compared to 2018.

Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 24th that it held an abandoned animal adoption campaign on the 22nd to realize animal welfare through the promotion of adoption culture for abandoned dogs.

This event was held at the Damyang 5-day Market, where animal sales used to take place, together with local animal protection volunteers for people looking for companion animals.

Along with the growth of the companion animal industry, the county actively promoted pet etiquette to be observed in daily life and matters related to the Animal Protection Act, which have emerged as social issues along with the problem of abandoned dogs.

Those who wish to adopt abandoned animals fill out an application form on site and proceed with adoption after confirming animal registration, vaccinations, and neutering surgery at an animal hospital. The county supports 150,000 KRW, which is 60% of the 250,000 KRW inspection and surgery costs, to reduce the adopter's burden.

A county official said, “We hope this campaign will serve as an opportunity for all of us to reflect on our social responsibility toward companion animals and the dignity of life,” adding, “We expect a proper companion animal culture to be established and plan to continue various campaigns to realize animal welfare.”
