Groundbreaking for Songdo Severance Hospital with 800 Beds... Opening Scheduled for Late 2026

On the Day of the Groundbreaking Ceremony... "Fulfilling the Role of a Bio-Industrial Hub Hospital"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jihee Kim] Yonsei University Medical Center announced on the 23rd that it has broken ground for the construction of Songdo Severance Hospital (tentative name), scheduled to open at the end of 2026 in Songdo International City, Incheon.

The groundbreaking ceremony held in the afternoon at the new site of Songdo Severance Hospital was attended by Huh Dong-soo, Chairman of the Yonsei University Foundation; Seo Seung-hwan, President of Yonsei University; Yoon Dong-seop, Vice President for Medical Affairs and Director of the Medical Center; as well as officials from Yonsei University and Yonsei Medical Center. Also present were Park Nam-chun, Mayor of Incheon Metropolitan City; Shin Eun-ho, Chairman of the Incheon Metropolitan Council; National Assembly members Jeong Il-young and Song Young-gil; and Lee Won-jae, Commissioner of the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority. Attendees received a progress report on the development of Songdo Severance Hospital from Director Yoon Dong-seop and participated in the groundbreaking ceremony.

In his greeting at the ceremony, President Seo said, “The establishment of Songdo Severance Hospital is central to realizing the goals of Yonsei Science Park (YSP). It will serve not just as a treatment-focused hospital but as a 'bio-industrial hub hospital.' Through the construction of Songdo Severance Hospital, we will implement an industry-academia-research-hospital model to firmly establish Songdo as a leading K-Bio international city.”

The Songdo Severance Hospital construction project is jointly promoted by Yonsei University, Incheon City, and the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority under the international campus Phase 2 agreement involving Incheon City, IFEZ, Yonsei University, and Songdo International Complex Development. Yonsei University Medical Center selected Samwoo Architects as the design firm in August last year and is currently proceeding with the hospital design.

Songdo Severance Hospital is planned on a site of approximately 85,948㎡ (about 26,000 pyeong) with a total floor area of about 111,230㎡ (about 33,647 pyeong) and a total capacity of 800 beds.

Songdo Severance Hospital will serve as a regional base hospital for the Gyeongin area and the West Coast, as well as a research-specialized hospital equipped with bio-related research functions. Through collaboration with overseas universities, research institutes, pharmaceutical companies, and bio enterprises, it plans to conduct information technology and bio-convergence research, playing a key role within the Songdo Bio Cluster.
