[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Hyundai Motor Company's dedicated electric vehicle brand Ioniq's first model, the 'Ioniq 5,' has been unveiled.
Hyundai Motor Company revealed the Ioniq 5 to the world for the first time on the afternoon of the 23rd. The Ioniq 5 is an eco-friendly vehicle that marks the beginning of the journey toward the Ioniq brand's vision of 'Progress electrified for connected living' and signals the full arrival of the electric vehicle era. The company explained that it focuses not merely on technological advancement but on providing customers with a new mobility experience.
The model name combines 'Ion,' which refers to generating energy through electrical power, and 'Unique,' representing Hyundai's originality, to form the brand name Ioniq, with the number 5 added to indicate the vehicle class.
The Ioniq 5 is the first model to apply Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated electric vehicle platform, E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform). Electric vehicles built on the E-GMP platform reduce costs compared to those using internal combustion engine platforms and improve performance in all aspects, including battery, speed, driving range, and design.
Timeless Design Resembling the Pony
The exterior of the Ioniq 5 reinterprets Hyundai's design heritage that began with the Pony, creating a timeless design that connects the past, present, and future.
Just as the Pony, first unveiled in 1974, was an icon marking the beginning of South Korea's automotive industry, the Ioniq 5 embodies Hyundai's pioneering spirit represented by the Pony and leads the new era of electric vehicles as the first dedicated electric car.
The most distinctive design element of the Ioniq 5 is the Parametric Pixel. The Parametric Pixel is a unique design feature that shapes the pixel, the smallest unit composing an image, symbolizing the fusion of analog and digital and bridging generations.
This Parametric Pixel is applied to the headlights, taillights, wheels, and even the electric charging port, showcasing the Ioniq 5's unique design identity while offering customers creativity, enjoyment, and positive experiences that future mobility will provide.
The front of the Ioniq 5 features impressively thin headlights stretched horizontally, and for the first time in Hyundai's history, a clamshell hood that wraps the entire upper section is applied, minimizing the parting lines where surfaces meet and creating a sleek and high-tech image.
Additionally, the Active Air Flap (AAF) located at the lower front bumper improves airflow during driving, reducing air resistance to extend driving range while providing a dynamic feel.
On the side, the silhouette reminiscent of the Pony, combined with a straight character line and the longest wheelbase in its class at 3000mm, captures attention. The 20-inch wheels, the largest diameter ever used in Hyundai electric vehicles and designed with aerodynamic structures, present perfect electric vehicle proportions.
Furthermore, the digital side mirrors (Digital Side Mirror, for domestic market only), which connect cameras and monitors, and the auto flush outside door handles that automatically extend and retract when approaching with the smart key, create an advanced image.
The digital side mirrors, a first for Hyundai, replace conventional mirrors with cameras and monitors, significantly reducing blind spots to enhance safety and provide customers with a new electric vehicle experience previously unavailable in traditional cars.
Innovative Interior Space Breaking the Boundaries Between Living and Mobility
The interior of the Ioniq 5, optimized through the application of E-GMP, reflects the theme of a comfortable living space, transforming into an innovative area that breaks down the boundaries between living and mobility.
Thanks to the dedicated electric vehicle platform, the flat floor and visibly long wheelbase provide spacious occupant space and improved interior mobility.
The Universal Island, located where the center console of internal combustion engine vehicles would be, features a 15W fast wireless smartphone charging system and a two-tier tray structure. The lower tray can store luggage such as laptops or handbags. It can also move backward up to 140mm, allowing flexible use for both first- and second-row passengers depending on their needs.
Moreover, by utilizing the first-row driver and passenger relaxation comfort seats (including leg rests) that adjust the backrest and cushion angles to create a zero-gravity posture, and the second-row power sliding seats that can move forward up to 135mm, the Ioniq 5's interior can be transformed into various spaces for rest, work, or leisure.
The interior uses eco-friendly and recycled materials extensively. Paint containing bio-oil components extracted from plants such as rapeseed and corn is applied to door trims, door switches, and the crash pad. The seats are made from fabrics containing yarns derived from bio components extracted from sugarcane and corn.
Fabrics made from recycled transparent PET bottles are applied to the seats and door armrests, and Paperlet material, which has the lightness of paper and a natural material appearance, is used on the door garnish.
Dynamic and Efficient Driving Performance Unique to Dedicated Electric Vehicles
Hyundai operates the Ioniq 5 in two models: Long Range equipped with a 72.6kWh battery and Standard equipped with a 58.0kWh battery.
The maximum driving range per single charge is 410 to 430 km based on the Long Range rear-wheel-drive model (measured by domestic certification methods). With 350kW ultra-fast charging, 80% of the battery capacity can be charged within 18 minutes, and a 5-minute charge enables up to 100 km of driving range (based on European WLTP certification).
The motor, standard on the rear axle, delivers a maximum output of 160kW and maximum torque of 350Nm. Depending on the trim, an additional front motor can be added to enable all-wheel drive.
The Long Range all-wheel-drive model accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 seconds, offering dynamic driving performance.
Additionally, Hyundai equipped the Ioniq 5 with a Disconnector Actuator System (DAS) that can separate or connect the motor and drive shaft depending on driving conditions, allowing seamless switching between 2WD and 4WD to minimize unnecessary power loss and enable efficient driving.
With the E-GMP platform, the heaviest battery is positioned low and centrally under the vehicle, lowering the center of gravity. Combined with R-MDPS (rack-driven power steering) and a rear 5-link suspension, handling, ride comfort, and driving stability?all fundamental vehicle performance aspects?have been enhanced.
The Ioniq 5 is the world's first to apply a 400V/800V multi-fast charging system compatible with various charging infrastructures.
This multi-fast charging system uses the vehicle's drive motor and inverter to boost the 400V voltage supplied by the charger to an optimized 800V for the vehicle system, enabling stable charging.
Thanks to the 400V/800V multi-fast charging system, Ioniq 5 customers can use both ultra-fast 800V charging infrastructure and standard 400V chargers, freeing them from charging stress.
Application of Various Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
Hyundai emphasized that the Ioniq 5 secures safety and convenience by applying various advanced driver assistance systems that protect passengers from internal and external hazards, including active safety-based advanced autonomous driving technologies.
The vehicle is equipped with Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which automatically brakes when there is a risk of collision with vehicles approaching from the left or right at intersections, and assists with evasive steering if a pedestrian is detected near the lane edge ahead during driving.
Highway Driving Assist 2 (HDA 2) supports lane changes by steering control when the turn signal switch is operated, assists in congested traffic by responding to vehicles cutting in at close range, and provides safe and convenient driving on highways and expressways.
Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) is also applied, which automatically reduces speed before entering safety speed zones or curves and returns to the preset speed after passing these zones, ensuring safe speeds according to road conditions during highway driving.
The digital key allows vehicle access and starting via a smartphone application without a smart key. The built-in cam records video through front and rear cameras installed inside the vehicle, and recorded footage can be viewed on the infotainment system screen or smartphone.
Hyundai announced that domestic pre-orders for the Ioniq 5 will begin on the 25th. Pre-orders will be available for two trims of the Long Range model, priced in the low 50 million KRW range for the Exclusive trim and mid-50 million KRW range for the Prestige trim (before electric vehicle tax benefits, based on a 3.5% individual consumption tax rate / schedule for Standard model pre-orders and confirmed prices including tax benefits will be announced later).
Considering individual consumption tax benefits (up to 3 million KRW) and purchase subsidies (12 million KRW, based on Seoul city standards), the Long Range Exclusive trim is expected to be purchasable in the high 30 million KRW range.
Customers who pre-order will be eligible in a lottery to receive a free installation of the customizable interior V2L feature for 500 people.
