My Best Life Decision... Pukyong National University Produces First 'Late Bloomer' Graduate

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Pukyong National University’s College of Future Convergence, the first of its kind established among universities in the southeastern region to open the path to university graduation for those who missed educational opportunities, has produced its first graduates.

Pukyong National University (President Jang Young-soo) announced that the “late-blooming university students” who enrolled in the College of Future Convergence in 2017 received their diplomas on the 19th after four years of “working by day and studying by night (Jugeong Yadok, 晝耕夜讀).”

The College of Future Convergence is a lifelong education system support project by the Ministry of Education that helps adult learners aged 30 or older with a high school diploma or higher, or workers employed for more than three years after graduating from high schools (specialized high schools, Meister high schools), to obtain a formal bachelor’s degree.

The graduates on this day numbered 53, including ▷ Department of Lifelong Education and Counseling (23 students), ▷ Department of Mechanical and Shipbuilding Convergence Engineering (12 students), and ▷ Department of Electrical, Electronic and Software Engineering (18 students).

The ages of the graduates ranged from their 20s to their 60s. Over the past four years, they fueled their passion for learning through a tailored academic system for adult learners, including night classes, weekend classes, and online courses.

Jin-woo Park (47 years old, office worker) from the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Software Engineering was selected as an outstanding student among the 3,298 Pukyong National University graduates on this day and received the president’s citation.

On this day, two father-daughter pairs graduated simultaneously. Dae-sik Choi from the Department of Mechanical and Shipbuilding Convergence Engineering and his daughter Eun-young Choi from the Department of Ocean Engineering, as well as Eun-geun Gam from the Department of Mechanical and Shipbuilding Convergence Engineering and his daughter Ha-young Gam from the Department of Chemistry, received their diplomas together.

Seung-joo Kim (female, 59 years old, self-employed), who graduated from the Department of Lifelong Education and Counseling, said, “I started studying late with courage to become a lifelong education and counseling professional, and it was the best decision of my life,” adding, “The time spent on campus with my fellow students will remain a precious memory for life.”

The Department of Mechanical and Shipbuilding Convergence Engineering and the Department of Public Safety and Police Science at Pukyong National University’s College of Future Convergence are selecting new students for the 2021 academic year through a “document review + interview” process without the CSAT until the 23rd.
